Copilot plus PC - Source:Microsoft

Finding the right PC is an exercise in balancing cost, performance, and longevity which can feel like a daunting task. When you add the new capabilities of a Copilot+ system into the mix, the decision becomes even more nuanced. For those seeking to harness the advantages of AI-driven assistance without overspending, it’s essential to understand what features truly matter.

TL:DR – A friend of mine whos retiring is used to a state of the art pro level Dell Laptop running Windows 11 Pro and managed by his organisation. He wants a new Windows PC, doesn't have that kind of budget, and wants to buy the best he can to last a long long time. So the question is, should he buy a Copilot+ PC or a slighty older design to conserve his funds. Lets see if some analysis can help him.

Understanding the role of a Copilot+ PC

What is a Copilot+ PC and why do you need one?

A Copilot+ PC is a Windows 11 device powered by a neural processing unit (NPU) which is a specialised chip that can run Microsoft's generative AI tools because it is capable of performing more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS) These AI-powered tools, offer assistance for tasks such as writing, coding, analysis, and creative projects. Microsoft calls them the fastest, most intelligent Windows PCs ever built, with powerful new silicon, AI models and experiences. These include Automatic Super resolution, Recall, Paint Cocreator, Photos Restyle Image and Cocreator, translation of Live Captions, full Windows Studio Effects and more. A Copilot+ PC acts as a digital aide, streamlining workflows and improving productivity for professionals, students, and hobbyists alike. This type of PC is ideal for those who want to embrace advanced technology while remaining in a familiar Windows environment.

System requirements for a Copilot+ PC

With an eyebrow raising level of emphasis, at the time of writing in January 2025, Intel and AMD CPUs and GPUs can't meet the Copilot+ PCs minimum requirements which are:

Processor
A compatible processor or System on a Chip (SoC). This currently includes the Snapdragon® X Plus and the Snapdragon® X Elite. We will update this list periodically as more options become available.
RAM
16 gigabytes (BG) DDR5/LPDDR5
Storage
256GB SSD/UFS

Microsoft adds that 'specific features plus apps and hardware that you add to your Copilot+ PC may exceed these minimum requirements'. We all remember the minimum system requirements for Vista being totally unworkable so thats something to remember. A shame, as Vista would be quite fast nowadays and was unfairly tarred by the brush of sluggishness.

Key benefits of using a copilot+ PC in everyday tasks

From drafting documents to creating complex data models, a Copilot+ PC simplifies intricate tasks. Familiar Windows tools and apps become AI-enabled to help you save time, reduce repetitive work, and improve accuracy. Whether you’re managing your home finances or small business operations or working on creative projects, these system enhance efficiency and empower users to focus on high-value activities.

Setting a Realistic Budget

Defining a reasonable budget for your Copilot+ PC

Establishing a budget ensures you don’t overspend while still getting a device that meets your needs. Reasonable budgets typically range from £800 to £1,200, depending on performance requirements, peripherals required and intended use. Higher priced Copilot+ PC's are also available.

Weighing cost against performance and longevity

While cheaper options may seem appealing, they often lack durability and futureproofing. Investing in a Copilot+ PC from a well known PC manufacturer should ensure longevity, reducing the need for frequent hardware upgrades.

Essential Features to Look For

Processing power: Striking a balance between speed and cost

A Snapdragon® X Plus or a Snapdragon® X Elite is essential for a Copilot+ PC. Systems based on previously high-end CPUs like the i7 or Ryzen 7 won't work. Both processors offer sufficient performance for Copilot+ PCs but the Elite is more powerful but at the cost of higher energy consumption.

RAM and storage: How much is enough for your needs?

16GB of RAM is the minimum, but more is always better these days. Storage again the minimum is 256GB but you should include at least 512GB and ideally 1TB, supplemented by external drives for backup and less regularly needed data such as complete photo libraries, music, video and the like.

Graphics capabilities, Some Copilot+ PCs dont have a dedicated GPU!

A dedicated GPU is vital for gaming, video editing, or CAD software. However, for Copilot+ PC functionality, the integrated graphics in Copilot+ PC compatible computers are more than adequate. Some Copilot+ PCs dont have a dedicated GPU so if you are buying for games then perhaps these ones are not for you!

Battery life considerations for Copilot+ PCs

Copilot+ PC battery life is nothing short of extraordinary compared to recent Intel and AMD based Windows hardware. You should be expecting to get over 12 hours, in some cases 15-19 hours out of a charge. These are Apple silicon based Mac levels of battery life, I know you're not looking for a Mac otherwise why are you reading this article but perhaps it should not be surprising as Copilot+ PCs are ARM based laptops too and Apples Mac computers with Apple silicon have revolutionised their entire product line and made Intel based Mac computers obsolete.

Where to find budget-friendly options

The best retailers and online stores for affordable PCs

Look for trusted retailers such as John Lewis (in the UK), Dell direct, Lenovo direct or Amazon.

Exploring renewed, refurbished and certified pre-owned Devices

Certified refurbished Copilot+ PCs offer excellent value, combining affordability with reliability. Ensure they come with warranties for peace of mind. Online platforms with specialised stores like Computer Exchange (UK) or Morgan Computers (UK) often provide very competitive prices especially on grade A used computers but you need to read the specifications carefully. Copilot+ PCs became available in mid 2024 and are starting to appear on these sites which specialise in renewed or refurbished computers.

Generally speaking renewed computers are indistinguishable from new if you buy them from recognised outlet stores such as Amazon renewed.

Prioritising build quality and design

Durability: Materials and build that stand the test of time

Select devices made from durable materials like aluminium or reinforced plastic. Build quality should withstand daily wear and tear. Laptop screens are of particular concern, and you should look for high quality rugged displays.

Ergonomics: Comfortable design for extended use

Prioritise features such as adjustable screens, with a keyboard and trackpad layout that works for you. Comfort is crucial for prolonged productivity.

The role of peripherals

Monitors, keyboards, mice, and docking stations enhance productivity

Invest in peripherals that complement your workflow. It is very satisfying to plug a laptop into a dock with just one USB-C cable and have dual monitors  bigger keyboards and faster networking automatically enabled to significantly enhance your efficiency. A decent dock is essential if you have a laptop and an external monitor. These can be expensive so you need to factor it in to your budget.

Do you need additional accessories for your Copilot+ PC right away?

Consider vital accessories like external backup drives, monitors. external keyboard and mouse. Budget for these essentials alongside the PC. You can make do with existing peripherals too, via a docking station with plenty of ports, and add newer better ones as funds allow.

Futureproofing your investment

How to choose a PC that can handle future updates

Check whether your chosen Copilot+ PC supports upgrades like additional RAM or storage. If not max it out if you possibly can, or choose a different one. Futureproofing minimises costs over time and keeps your device relevant for longer.

Avoid short-term savings that lead to long-term costs

Cheaper models may lack durability or scalability. Spending slightly more upfront can prevent costly replacements later.

Common pitfalls to avoid

ARM application availability

This is Windows 11, but it is Windows 11 for ARM based computers so not all applications work. Newer applications such as Microsoft 365 suite of apps will be fine but be careful to test any legacy apps you might need before embarking on the purchase of a Copilot+ PC. Virtualisation of Intel instructions isn't going to be possible, so if you have a collection of older Windows virtual machines you probably need to keep an older Intel Windows computer around for those. Remote desktop into them from your sparkly new Copilot+ PC.

Overpaying for features you won’t use

Evaluate your actual needs and avoid unnecessary add-ons like excessive GPU power if you don’t require it.

Compromising on quality for an Unreasonably Low Price

Ultra-cheap PCs often cut corners on quality and performance. Opt for a balanced choice from a good brand such as Dell or Lenovo that offers reliability, functionality and after sales service and support including drivers.

Environmental Considerations

The Eco-friendly choice: Sustainable options in budget PCs

Look for energy-efficient devices with certifications like ENERGY STAR. Opting for eco-friendly models reduces environmental impact.

Recycling and Reusing Old Devices Responsibly

Consider donating or recycling old devices to minimise electronic waste. Many retailers offer trade-in programmes.

Understanding Return Policies and Warranties

Familiarise yourself with return windows and warranty terms. These safeguards ensure peace of mind in case of defects or dissatisfaction.

Finalising Your Decision and an example

How to Compare Models and Make the Right Choice

Use comparison tools to evaluate specifications, warranties, and user reviews. Factor in after-sales support when making your final decision. Students may benefit from lightweight laptops, while professionals might need more powerful stronger laptops. Note however that this can be more difficult than it seems. In the example below the laptops appear very similar indeed, but the pro model isn't a touch screen so if that is important to you then its not the right choice.
