Understanding Amazon Coins and their discontinuation
Amazon Coins were introduced in 2013 to as a kind of gift card points system more than as a currency in order to encourage purchases on the Amazon Appstore, enabling users to acquire applications and gaming content. The Amazon Appstore has failed to get adoption apart from on Amazon's own Fire OS devices based the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), the underlying open source system developed by Google for Android devices.
Minecraft and Angry Birds 2 available on the Amazon Appstore
Many users are particularly interested in gaming content when utilising Amazon Coins. Several titles stand out not only for their quality but also for their compatibility with the Amazon platform. We've picked “Minecraft”, and “Angry Birds 2”. hese applications offer extensive gameplay options, suitable for both casual gamers and enthusiasts alike, and have both have data privacy policies and declarations about what user data they need, and have recent updates on the Amazon Appstore.
“Minecraft” is especially notable, allowing players to express their creativity within a blocky, open-world environment. With constant updates and an engaging community, purchasing this title through Amazon Coins is a worthwhile investment. Furthermore, the app supports numerous in-game purchases, providing users with additional content for the initial investment.

Microsoft Office and other productivity apps on the Amazon Appstore
Beyond gaming, a sparse array of productivity applications is available on the Amazon Appstore, and though you might think they could offer a place for using those Amazon Coins many only support in-app purchases which cannot be used with Amazon Coins.
“Microsoft 365 (Office)”, integrates essential word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation tools into a convenient mobile package. For individuals who frequently work on collaborative projects, investing in this application might greatly enhance workflow and accessibility while on the go. It has not been updated since October 2024 which is a long time for mobile apps. It does not let you purchase via Amazon Coins and instead offers a trial for three months followed by a montly fee. I have to use Microsoft tools for work but as my Fire Max is a content consumption device I don't really want work tools like this on it.
“Microsoft Teams”, appears to be a free app but it too has languished on the Amazon Appstore, no updates since November 2021 and given this particular product from Microsoft is changing at a fast pace, this means that it is far too out of date to be recommended.
Exploring other app options on the Amazon Appstore
Amazon Coins can also be used for some entertainment apps.
“TuneIn Radio Pro“, was a good choice for me for 588 coins. I've used TuneIn Radio, a free ad supported app on other plaforms for years, and the Pro version is exactly the same as the free app with access to 100,000 real radio stations and 5.7M podcasts but without the banner and additional adverts.
“Stellarium“, doesnt cost anything, and hasn't been updated for over a year, but I felt it was worth a mention because its so beautiful and works nicely on the Fire Max 11.

Conclusion
Amazon Coins are dead. Use them while you can. The poor quality overall of the Amazon Appstore apps is a shame, you'll have to hunt for things to spend them on. Perhaps that's why it's gone! There are other apps for the Amazon Fire Max 11 and other Fire OS based Amazon tablets, and I really like the tablet hardware. See my other article Amazon Fire Max 11 - best value for the money tabet for details and information about Plex, IMDB, Neutron Player, VLC for Fire, and the alternative open source app store F-Droid.
