Vintage Computer Hardware: Glimpse into heritage technology
For those with an appreciation for technology’s evolution, vintage computer hardware offers a fascinating window into the past. These older computer systems, once cutting-edge, now stand as monuments to an era when these systems laid the foundation for today’s advancements. The NeXT Cube, with its sleek design and innovative features, is an iconic piece of vintage computer history, that I used at Lotus to demonstrate our 'new' spreadsheet 'Improv' while the Sun SPARCstation was a powerhouse in workstations for technical professionals which we ported 'Lotus Notes' to for better scalability. Meanwhile, the Classic Macintosh including my favouritem the SE/30 still has an influence on modern systems. Further back in time, in the 80's the IBM PC 5160 and IBM PC AT 5170 were the main computers in use in business. Systems like the MSX, my first home computer, also pushed boundaries in the early days of gaming and computing, marking the transition from analog to digital. The passion for collecting and restoring these relics is alive and well today, as enthusiasts seek to preserve the magic of these vintage computers. Whether you’re a collector, a history buff, or just curious, these machines offer a rare opportunity to experience the roots of modern computing. I have too many, including a 68040 NeXT Cube, and a couple of Sun Workstations. Articles about them are collected here.
